Feliz Navidad

I would like to wish all my readers and family a Merry Christmas. This time of year is an important period for family and friends to reconnect, share and enjoy each others love and company. We must also remember the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His birth brought the necessary love for mankind to flourish in peace and prosperity.

I will enjoy tamales, menudo, turkey and all the trimmings this Christmas here in New Mexico. Luminarias, manger scenes, and midnight mass are all set; may you and yours enjoy your traditions as well. I thank God for being born in this state and being able to share a rich and common culture with many people from Silver City to Raton, Las Cruces to Santa Fe, Roswell to Gallup and all the many communities that are thriving in this beautiful land. We are blessed to be New Mexicans and from the "bottom of my heart" like the song, Feliz Navidad!!!

State of Limbo: Hispanics, GOP, and Immigration

After a night of reading American political theory I rode the Chicago Red Line train to the next block or two and ate breakfast at this mom n' pop diner I like. In the kitchen the were the owners working and taking orders while a couple of Mexican cooks fired up my eggs and bacon. When I walked back to my apartment building our groundskeeper Hector was outside salting the sidewalks. Everyday I encounter numerous Mexicans working here legally or illegally for all I know. As an American who respects the Constitution and all the laws of this great country I cannot argue that these hardworking people did break our law and are living here illegally. As a New Mexican with centuries of Spanish ancestry I am sympathetic to my brothers and sisters here working for bad pay but better than what it would be in Mexico, Central and South America; they are working at a level that most Americans simply refuse.

In the latest New York Times/ CBS News poll, 8 percent of Republican Primary voters named immigration or illegal immigrants as the most important issue facing the nation, right behind the war and tied with the economy. A party that was gaining more and more Hispanic voters in the past eight years is now making it hard for Hispanics to vote Republican especially when we hear the anti-immigrant, racist anger fueled by many in the party. I am very upset that the Republican dark horse candidate Gov. Huckabee who seemed to attract the most potential Hispanic Republican votes accepted the founder of the Vigilante racist group, Minuteman Project Jim Gilchrist's endorsement; Huckabee called Gilchrist's endorsement "providence".

Gov. Huckabee and the rest of the GOP candidates, not including Sen. McCain, are using hard line rhetoric and policy towards the immigration issue to attract the votes of the racist, ignorant wing of the Republican party. Their rhetoric and ingenuity they displayed at the Univision debate on Sunday has solidified many Hispanics votes this fall. It will take someone with a practical, compassionate, and moderate stance toward to immigration to attract the Hispanics back to the GOP. I believe that man is Sen. John McCain, he certainly has my support.

I in no way condone illegal immigration, but one must see that our system is set up to be broken. Our economy partially depends on the cooks, busboys, field workers, maids, janitors, and construction workers who are here illegally. If the racist Republican voters want to ship all illegal men, women, and children back to their native countries I say let them, then they will see the true impact they make on our everyday lives. If we want to fix the immigration problem we have fix MEXICO, it is that simple. Their unstable economy, corrupt government, and shared NAFTA policy is the root of our immigration problem. We have laws for immigration, lets enforce those to the fullest extent first. We must make our immigration up to date and efficient and offer a clear path to citizenship to those who have been here contributing to the American Economy and way of life.

Final Exam Time

I have had about six hours of sleep the past two days;I simply can't sleep. I am constantly reading for exam preparation, reading the other blogs, getting distracted by friends and downtown Chicago, then I feel guilty and get back to the books. I will be home in Las Cruces Saturday night, everything will finally come to a momentary break. My younger brother Zach who played for the mighty Bulldawgs as safety and kicker is having his team banquet which the family is attending on Sunday along with the Ms. Teen New Mexico Pageant at Hotel Encanto on Sunday. Isaac's (otra hermano) girlfriend Katie Arnold is Ms. Teen Las Cruces and we know she will win the crown, tiara whatever it is.

So a busy start upon my arrival. I will probably meet the Governor and some dignitary at the end of the month at a Horse Endurance ride being hosted in Las Cruces. Also look out for a new business by A.H. Diaz & Company in Las Cruces, Albuquerque, or Santa Fe; I have to travel to Santa Fe and seek information concerning licenses. I also look forward to heading back up to the ranch for some long needed physical work on the beloved land we call New Mexico.

I must finish reviewing political, economic, and historical writings before my mind drifts back home again. hasta luego-

Gore, Golden Statues and Medals

Today Mr. Gore recieved his Nobel Peace Prize. I don't know why but it is hard for me to take this man seriously when I see so much disdain in his heart. No medal, no oscar, no Hollywood indoctrination will ever make you Jesus or President Mr. Gore.

Chavez and his raw end of a deal with Democrats

Mayor Chavez I look at it this way... you have been politically screwed by Sen. Schumer (NY) of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee by making it clear the blue boys back East would rather support ultra liberal Rep. Udall as their candidate! Oh and there is that part time Governor/Cowboy(rolling my eyes)/Presidential hopeful Bill Richardson who has so much political weight(it shows) that caused everyone in the state to speculate his entrance into the Senate race in a couple months; remember fellow speculator Rep. Udall who jumped in the race then jumped out of the race then jumped back in! I still think the Governor may show his true carpetbagging colors and screw Udall by getting in the race officially in February. So do not get down Mr. Mayor, let the Democrats and Republicans chew each other up for the next year and your raw end may not taste that bad after all.

P.S

If you want a good laugh watch Rep. Wilson try to be Southern when she visits real Republicans down near Texas way. We all heard about her little visit with the Cervantes family this past summer, we know who she really is.

Our History, Our Future

“Dec. 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan”…in the tranquil morning of December 7th one could hear the pulse of the ocean waves and see the glistening sun that God had blessed upon Pearl Harbor that fateful day. It was the calm before the storm, the sun would be blocked by the war planes of Japan and the shadow of war, sacrifice, and death was cast upon the American people for four arduous years.

I am one of the remaining Americans who do not forget Pearl Harbor and the 2,350 servicemen we lost that tragic day, I will forever “Remember Pearl Harbor”. Their legacy is one of sacrifice to all Americans who continue to fight for liberty, democracy, and individual rights. Pearl Harbor is a constant reminder to all generations of America that the enemy will go to great lengths to defeat our great nation but the soul of this nation will not be defeated and will not cease to cowardly attacks. The Islamic extremists of the Middle East are now finding this fact to be true; the September 11th atrocities wounded our country but galvanized our conviction.

Our nation’s leaders must be faithful to the fundamentals of the constitution and liberties that so many men and women have given their lives for. They must be responsible with our military capabilities and use diplomacy to the fullest extent. We can never allow the development of totalitarian regimes that deprive innocent individuals their natural rights. We are not charged to export our principles to every end of the world but we must preserve democracy where it has root.

The dead of Pearl Harbor and World War Two died not for our nation but what our nation embodied; the principles of natural rights, liberty, egalitarianism, individual rights, and the opportunity to pursue happiness. I ask you today to take a couple moments from your busy workday to remember the past and envision what we can be tomorrow. United like our past generations, we can overcome our struggle with evil and be victorious.

“With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounding determination of our people - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God.”

-President Franklin D. Roosevelt

Good News About Iran, Don't Relax Just Yet

The recent National Intelligence Estimate regarding Iran’s nuclear program is excellent news for our country and the international community. It eases the growing tension between Washington D.C. and Tehran by giving both countries a new opportunity to use foreign diplomacy as opposed to a third military front. Anytime diplomacy can work, make it work.

But with this good news we must not forget what the report also validates; Iran did indeed have a nuclear weapons program that they had tried to conceal from the United States and the United Nations. Iran is capable of reviving this program and if we as an international community soften our established stance towards their nuclear aspirations we very well could be involved in a third military front.

In order to prevent Iran from their nuclear ambition we must include diplomacy of discipline and incentive while remaining united as an international community of democracies. Our world leaders must balance the urgency to rush into war and resist from turning their heads the other way. Iran and the United States have an arduous path towards a stable relationship, but it is a relationship we must develop.

Hey New Mexico

So the past month has been extremely busy for me. My studies here at Loyola have kicked into full throttle with finals coming up. I am actually finding myself struggling in a history class for the first time. I apologize to my readers for my absence but school comes first. I simply have not had the energy to write about our beloved New Mexico politics. I will write more thoughts on the Ranchers proposal that opposes wilderness in Dona Ana, The Republican Senate primary, Congressional District 2 Democratic primary, and thoughts on the GOP and Immigration. I'll be in New Mexico this coming Christmas for about three weeks so I should have ample time to write on these subjects. If any of you have any suggestions or would like to write a column about young New Mexicans and politics please email me, aaronhenrydiaz@newmexicopolitico.com. Also I have a news update, I will be graduating early in about one year, December 2008, so count on seeing me back in the political scene in Dona Ana and Santa Fe! Feliz Navidad!

Why I dislike carpetbaggers

The secret is out! New Mexico has the best culture, cuisine, natural wonders, and more importantly to our carpetbagging socialist adversaries, political opportunity. The election of Governor Richardson galvinized the importation of ultra-liberal ideology and other carpetbagging individuals to our pragmatic state. The Democratic party has been taken over by liberal enviromentalists, social progressives, and plain ol' ultra liberals with a bounty of money and time. This change in the Democratic party has spurred some in my own family to leave the party which they have been loyal to for years. There is no longer enough room in the Democratic party for conservative, moderate, and libertarian leaning people to have a true voice in their party. The common people are being drowned out by the carpetbaggers money, time, and liberal whinning. New Mexico is not a priority for these people who are driven by idealism and ambition. They will do more harm to our state in a year than what the patron did in the last 90 years! Liberal politicians like Nathan Small, Oscar Vasquez Butler, Bill McCamley, Tom Udall, and others must be monitored and defeated.

A case for Good Congressman Pearce

Congressman Pearce,

This whole political fallout caused by Senator Domenici's decision has brought chaos to our state. I am a young, sometimes naive college student. I see things the way they are but when facts align themselves with theory it is my job to dissect those facts and circumstances. I believe you are a good pragmatic man. You have served Southern New Mexico faithfully and you have earned the respect of both moderate Democrats and Republicans. You are not a career politician who has been corrupted by the dealings of power. I know that if you decide to run for the Senate race you will have a very good chance at winning it. You will beat Heather Wilson in a primary but she will cost you campaign money and resources. You will face Marty Chavez because Denish and him will make a power pact in the manner that many Democrats do in this state. He is not very popular down here. He has few supporters (besides his arm candy Joni Guiterrez) and even ABQ is'nt so hot about him. So why not run against the Dems of the North and continue, even add to Domenici's legacy: develop your own Legacy but most importantly New Mexico's legacy. Now what could possibly stop you from this decision. Your rising star has taken hold in the congress, people like you as congressman here, your sure to fight for Southern New Mexican issues which entail countless re-election bids for you. Why venture to the unknown state wide politics of Democratic New Mexico: a land of party corruption and patron figures make policy and even yield it to our very own emperor of a Governor. This brings me to your contemplation. You are comfortable where you are but opportunity is knocking on your door. I do believe, along with many, you will be a great Senator but one person stands in your way. Not Heather Wilson, Not Lt. Gov. Denish, Not Marty Chavez but the only man who in New Mexican history who has had the full political blessing of the New Mexican patron and has used this confidence of power to make his own political advancement. Governor William Richardson alias, Billy, Big Bill, King Bill etc... His fingers are dipped in every political puddle in the state. His presidential campaign is not doing well and he will soon realize it is easier to be a big fish in a small pond. He has voiced his desire not to be Senator of New Mexico but this is the man who promised New Mexico was the only thing on his agenda in 2006. I am sure you know not to ever take the Governors word as concrete on any issue. He is the finest politician the state has seen. Machiavelli would be impressed. He stands in your way and his announcement, which I expect in January, will lead to a great political battle. He has no care for Democrats who are seeking the seat, he knows he should be the worthy successor of Domenici and no minimalist Democrat or Southern cowboy Republican will get in his way. This kind of candidate does not deserve the office. A man who serves for self interest is the greatest disease that has infected our modern politics. I believe and have faith that you are the true man for the job. I know you have weighed these cons and pros delicately and because I know you are a good pragmatic man you have my support in whatever decision you make. New Mexico is most in need of people like you; whether it be in city council, the house of representatives or the United State Senate. I support you Congressman Pearce and I want you to know there are many who share my sentiment.

“We are face to face with our destiny and we must meet it with a high and resolute courage. For us is the life of action, of strenuous performance of duty; let us live in the harness, striving mightily; let us rather run the risk of wearing out than rusting out.”- President Theodore Roosevelt

(I was compelled to write this after reading the skeptical writings of many New Mexican bloggers. My writing may be a bit rough but give me a break I just wrote a 20 page essay on American Feminism and Abolition hence I am bit tired, haha)

No Texas tornadoes here: just a good ol New Mexican power vacuum!

Something hotter than our chile made news today; Senator Pete Domenici will not seek re-election in next years election. I am not surprised by his decision but excited to see the political vacuum this will spawn in New Mexico. Democrats and Republicans alike will be aligning themselves with voting caucus' and groups to get the go ahead to run.

If and when the Governor realizes he needs to drop out of the presidential race I do believe he will run for the vacated seat. This speculation that Congressman Udall will run for the seat will only happen when the power player Bill makes his mind up. On the Republican side this leaves the state party with the grand task of offering worthy competition to the Democratic players. Congressman Pearce of the New Mexican second district is a leading up and coming Republican in the state and congress. He is popular amongst conservative Democrats, moderate Republicans, and the GOP of Roswell and Hobbs.

He advocates good decision making based on the greater good. His decisions may not always be popular with the leftist socialist John Wayne "wannabe's" who sit on the Dona Ana county commission, NM Wild, Dona Ana Wild, and this so called "rural revolution"... oh I almost forget about those complaining retired people who watch Las Cruces City Council meetings all day and make notes of what they want to scream about next(please get out of my town people I am tired of your bitchin').

Ok sorry about that I was sidetracked.

It has been speculated in the past year but never really taken seriously that Pearce would run for Domenici's seat. With the Senator's departure it leaves a golden opportunity for the Congressman to fill that void. Heather Wilson was in the South this past summer presumably politikin' for the Domenici vacant seat. While I believe the congressman has not made any public intention on running for Domenici's seat I do know that the state GOP will most likely call upon Pearce to help save and win the seat of Domenici. Wilson will not be asked to run and frankly she will not have the marginal support that pushed her to a skirmished re-election last year against Patricia Madrid.

Which brings me to other possible Democrats piling on for the political suction. Patricia Madrid may be running for Domenici's seat or if Udall pursues that seat she may run for his congressional seat. We can all speculate the moon if we want but we will not know until King Bill decides if he wants seconds here New Mexico. This coming January will be interesting on both sides.

In closing I do want to thank Senator Domenici for his esteemed service to the people of New Mexico and the United States Senate. He is the longest serving Senator in New Mexican history. He arose to the challenge of serving his community and always put New Mexico first. I along with many admire his dedication to our beloved New Mexico. I wish him a well deserved retirement and hope for another great person to arise to this occasion and take the lead, not for the Democratic party or GOP, but for the people of New Mexico. Muchas Gracias Senador Domenici!

Were all intellectuals evidently

In the wake of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit to Columbia University in New York, protesters old and young gathered to voice their discontent with his presence. I initially was angered over the invitation the university offered him. They were clearly promoting themselves on behalf of liberal dialogue with the enemy. Mahmoud is a joke, a lackey to the religious leaders of Iran, he claims himself to be an intellectual. In his speech he gives this long, sophomoric explanation of why science is so important and how God gave it to us to be inquisitive. Obviously it was a set up for his argument and defense of his widely publicized denial of the holocaust; Mahmoud believes that with this inquisitive mind we must look into the actual numbers of the holocaust. He plays the numbers game that modern anti-Semitic holocaust denying idiots use. This tactic gives them some intellectual ground to portray their true convictions as mere pursuit of academic truth. Ill brand this the big BULLSHIT! How can Columbia invite a widely known idiot to have some sort of academic forum? This forum not only displayed Mahmouds kindergarten doctorates degree in propaganda but Columbia's own stupidity in sanctioning this an academic dialogue. The fact they took him seriously and legitimized his intellectualism by allowing his BS to further deplete our ozone layer is a sorry situation. If Mahmoud is an intellectual I guess were all intellectuals... actually I would rather be dumb and ignorant if that is the standard according to Columbia. God Bless America and New Mexico!

New Mexican Supreme Court

The legacy of Justice Pamela Minzner will be one of great civil service to the people of New Mexico. Her unfortunate passing last month has left a vacancy on the New Mexico Supreme Court and today I have confirmed news that Chief Judge Robert E. Robles has applied for the vacant seat.

I am happy to see Judge Robles file for the job. I agreed with Governor Richardson's remarks at the swearing in ceremony for Judge Fernando Macias that Judge Robles "looks like a Supreme Court Judge". See the video on Heath Haussamen's site. Judge Robles has set a standard to follow in the New Mexico Judicial system. His strict interpretation of the law but fair judicial mind has made him one the most respected Judges in the area. He will be a great asset to the New Mexico Supreme Court and more importantly to the people of New Mexico.

I encourage the Governor to remember what he said and make it happen. Southern New Mexico needs more representation in Santa Fe and the addition of Judge Robles to the bench in Santa Fe is a great start.

Left wing push or anti-tax revenge?

In a state like New Mexico where the red chile is hot and the political scene is hotter there is never a dull moment.

Something interesting was reported on Heath Haussamen's blog concerning a couple new candidacy announcements. Earlier this week County Commissioner Oscar Vasquez Butler announced he will challenge Sen. Mary Jane Garcia for the District 36 Senate seat she has held for over 20 years. I was alarmed because both candidates are old time members of the Patron; this could get dirty but it is primary season.

Haussamen later reports that Jesus Caro, Mesilla Mayor Pro Tem, will seek the seat held by Joni Gutierrez in District 33; she has served for three years. This did not bring such a surprise to me because Gutierrez has a less than stellar reputation as a legislator; she has only sponsored one popular bill that abolished expiration dates on gift cards for consumers. Sounds simple, an older guard of the party challenging a young naive politico who seems to have had her chance and has not pleased her constituency and party.

One detail in Haussamen's blog caught my attention. He reported that Caro had been "pushed by a group of activists" to run against Gutierrez. The same group, Haussamen writes, pushed Butler to run against Garcia as well. Do we really want candidates that are "pushed" to run? In the respective articles Haussamen points that both Garcia and Gutierrez were in favor of the tax increase for the spaceport: Caro and Butler were not.

Who is this "group of activists" and what is their agenda? Why do they have such influence with both Butler and Caro? I think they are either a group of anti-tax constituents from both districts or a leftist anti-business activist group. This matter must be looked into, the Democratic party must find what private interest groups are influencing their Mr. POPULACE candidate Oscar Butler with a history in leftist activism in California. I do not know Mr. Caro or his affiliations but I will research him. I hope the people of those respective districts ask these candidates who this group of activists are.

I may be a young naive college student but someone may be spoiling and splitting the chile crop for the Democrat's patrons this next year.

A struggle worth fighting for!

Las Cruces, New Mexico; home to the most delicious red and green chile, the tenacious Las Cruces Bulldawgs, and New Mexico State University the mecca of higher learning in New Mexico and surrounding areas(sorry Isaac UNM has a long way to go). Within a couple of weeks from my departure of the land of enchantment I remember why I vow to come back.... the influx of new transplanted citizens who decide to start changing the socio-political make up to what they and their Eastern and California liberal school told them what to do.

As a native son with roots in New Mexico dating back to the early 1800's it is my duty to return and fight this radical liberalism plaguing our state. Direct leaders of this movement are the members of New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, Dona Ana Wilderness, Rep. Steinborn and the Eco terrorists of Earth First. Before my move back to college in Chicago, the Dona Ana Wilderness designation was getting hotter than the best green chile from Chavez farms. I was a little irritated with the fact that I could not stay and really take an active role in this fight. I am happy to know and endorse the great New Mexicans like Jim Scarantino and the People For Preserving Our Western Heritage who are combating these pinko idealists.

The politicians who are giving legitimacy to this liberal cause are Rep. Steinborn, Commissioner Osc...OH wait REP. STEINBORN!! He is the head of Dona Ana Wilderness and Southern New Mexico Director for New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, son of one of the most repsected individuals and past mayors of our great city David Steinborn(rolling the eyes) who would never use the power of his office to see the city plans for development way back when and then go and buy those proposed lands( East Mesa anyone?) to make a quick buck. Maybe it is because I am young and naive and that's what I grew up learning from the vast majority of loyal Democrats. I think there is something fishy with his involvement in this issue. He is the link to NMWA, which has been linked to the radical and idealist Earth First. There is more to this agenda; its not just about saving a couple of mesquite bushes and lizards. Go to http://www.peopleforwesternheritage.com/ and read more!

Oh as I was saying Commissioner Oscar Vasquez Butler is not shy in his support of this liberal push for wilderness. I watched his smug populace smile while putting on a pro wilderness pin on his shirt at one of the meetings sponsored by Congressman Pearce. Mr. Butler has to have an opinion about everything and let everyone know about it because he is force to be dealt with... his hat is rather intimidating, A real John Wayne. heh.

I wish all my luck to the good folks fighting the good fight and hope that the people of Las Cruces see the real politics behind this issue. There is more to it than preserving the Organs, Robledos etc... These liberals want to rid any human existence on the land. Cattle ranching, agriculture, and the simple outdoor recreation we all enjoyed in high school will be eventually phased out if we let the left get their way. Fight on friends!

Update

Ok I would like to apologize to those of you that I had promised to see new posts on the New Mexico Politico but I have been extremely busy the last couple months. I was also told to keep my points of view low key since I was working within the political sphere this summer. What a summer it was for me! I gained experience, connections, and was blessed with the opportunity to see how our local political scene really does work.

I will be writing weekly posts this semester (I PROMISE) on the various issues that are prevelant in the Mesilla Valley and national issues. I am attending Loyola University Chicago and taking 15 credit hours working on the double major so give me some slack if I hit and miss!

Land and Growth

It is not hard to see the beauty and feel the mystique that makes Las Cruces the paradise in the desert. Our natural beauty along with our distinct cultural influences makes us a great place to live. This is proven by the fact that thousands of new "Crucenos" (Las Crucen in Spanish) have now laid their roots here and they are spreading. This city must grow because growth is progress and it benefits everyone! Now in what manner do we grow is an easy question answered; Fairly, Responsibly, and Safely.

We must not forget our roots. The Mesilla Valley has been the hub of New Mexico's agriculture industry. New Mexico State is a leading research industry for Ag and Animal Sciences. Our crops range from cotton, onions, pecans and of course CHILE! We are proud cattle growers and have always protected our natural enviroment. Any wilderness in Dona Ana will eventually phase out our time honored and respectable lifestyle, and most importantly our past.

The recent wildnerness campaign intiated by the enviromentalist of the world obviously dont see this. They must save the world and promote a one sided argument while ignoring any other suggestions. They promote making Dona Ana County a wilderness which would HALT growth here in Dona Ana; this is wrong and extreme. I do understand why they want it, WE ALL VALUE THE OPEN SPACE; but stoping growth is not natural and will not be a benefit to prosperity of Las Cruces.

We must look at our options and be pragmatic in our pursuit of a balance of responsible growth but also working at preserving our identity here in the Mesilla Valley.

Home Sweet Home

Hola Gente!

Yes I am finally back home in beautiful Las Cruces, New Mexico! I have not had a break to actually sit down and write until now.

My trek from Indiana lead me through the heart of the United States; Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas... It was a total of 1800 some miles in my 1993 Cadillac Eldorado with a burnt out a/c and and bad tires! I left Notre Dame on Thursday evening May 10Th and pulled up to my drive way around 3:30 AM Saturday Morning. It was a good experience but I will never do it again!

I have four jobs right now. I am working on a ranch near Red Rock, NM. I love this job because this is what I want to do for the rest of my life; the only problem is that I do not have enough money to purchase one right now. That is why I am going to college right, and later Law School.

I also work weekends opening and closing catered parties and weddings. Easy job and its a fun time.

I went from being a waiter in Indiana to being a kitchen helper at Guacamoles on Picacho. I am not crazy about this job but it keeps me humble and it pays my gas.

My final job is in the political realm, but I am keeping it disclosed for the time being. Those of you who know me personally may already know but to keep my political affiliation private I think this is best. I am helping the constituents of Southern New Mexico and I am loving it!

I will be posting a commentary on a young New Mexican's perspective of illegal immigration this weekend so check back soon.

I am home and I love the chile.

O' Fair New Mexico

Today I packed most of my belongings and my dorm room is bare. All that is left are my study materials, toiletries, some clothing, and a tv. There are three significant things I did leave hanging on my wall, a Notre Dame pennant, New Mexican flag, and the Holy Crucifix. Those three things travel wherever life takes me. I put them up where I live and they are the last items to be taken down when I leave. This school year has been academically challenging and emotionally draining, but I am finished with my classes and I am looking forward to returning to my beloved home, New Mexico.

After I was finished packing today I picked up a burger and turned the lonely television on and I watched my favorite, the History Channel, and the program that was airing was profiles on the 50 states. Within minutes they began their program on New Mexico!

When I reflect on my career choices that included my move out of state to receive my college degrees I always reason that although it has been difficult, it was the best thing I did. Although I miss home, I have had opportunities that most people my age back home would never have experienced in their lifetime. My move has also opened my eyes and placed a true value on my New Mexican roots and I have developed a greater appreciation for New Mexico. In high school I felt I was above all things and wanted to leave the first chance I could get. Well now that I am gone, I want to get back home as much as possible. I have finally found why it is the "land of enchantment", and what is the charm that entices so many foreigners to our little part of the world.

I think aside from the food, architecture, cultures, and landscapes its essential charm is embedded in her people. Its a state full of life, comparable to the vivid colors of spring in her deserts. It is a state where tradition meets modernity and make a marriage infused with old time principle and progressive attitudes toward our collective future. Our past still guides our future, but does not bound it. Opportunity runs wide and as far as the western horizons.

People here at school are alarmed at my passion for my state. They ask me why do I have my state flag in my room, and the biggest insult is "do you think your Texan or something?". We have a swagger, but not a loud condescending arrogance that our neighbor Texans posses. Our pride is quiet, it is slow to grow on one. We value our past but do not shy away from progress. Our culture is what separates us from the rest of the nation and some people do not understand us (as I am misunderstood). Our culture is one with roots from many. When people assume that I am Mexican, I correct them, I am New Mexican. Our past is painted with as many different colors that we find in the summer sunsets.

I know that New Mexico is a beauty, but not all see the same as I. There are problems that haunt our state. Political corruption has a tradition in New Mexico and I truly believe this corruption is the root of all inadequacies that have discouraged in some way our progress. I hope that all the politicians put their state first and not their respective political parties agendas in future legislative sessions, county commission meetings, zoning commissions, and state party conventions. Republicans, Democrats, hell even the Greens all offer certain policies that would enhance our state. A new wave of New Mexican politics is on its way, and I think we need to ask ourselves what are our needs and what can fullfill these needs responsibly and respectively.

I'll leave you guys and gals with that thought. I must remind you all that I know I am not the greatest writer in the world but these were some thoughts I had today while I was packing. Who would have thought that packing would be such a profound experience... heh

Almost done!

I am in the thick of studying, completing papers, and packing. It is the end of the semester and I will be making that long 1000 mile drive back home to the land of enchantment. I am ready to go home. I miss my grandma's red chile colorado, my moms salsa, and the mild evenings watching the sunset over the Mesilla Valley. I am also looking forward to getting involved in the local political scene. I have recently attained an opportunity to work with the citizens of Las Cruces in one of the district offices of our representation in Washington D.C. I want to investigate more on this spaceport and the economic and environmental impact study(if one is available). Since I will be on summer break, I will work on this blog and try to give a young New Mexicans perspective to the social, political, and economic climate of our great state and country. I want to discuss why the Democrats have been the superior political party in the state since 1912. I would also like to learn why the Republicans of New Mexico are so inefficient and disunited that in turn allows a one party system in this state. I think Mario Burgos offers a clear commentary on the subject. I want to know who and what is behind the sanctioned urban sprawl of the East Mesa in Las Cruces. I want to endorse my candidate for president by the end of the summer, right now I am leaning towards McCain or Richardson. I also would like to analyze the future of the new Las Cruces downtown. Is immigration really that big of a problem and why do we have these racist vigilantes from back East and up North here on OUR border telling us what is American and what is illegal aliens; if they want aliens they should go to Roswell.

I better get back to my paper on how British Empiricism and Skepticism influenced modern philosophy. Keep checking for new posts in a couple weeks. Carpe Diem!

Irritated with Ignorance

I would like to know how many New Mexicans will be blasting off to space in the next couple years? Ok and how many will be going to college? Which one is more realistic, please help me figure this out. This increased tax is plain stupid. The federal, state, and corporate companies have more than ENOUGH money to finance this bad investment. Our taxes are high as it is, and if were approving a tax increase it better be going to a good investment, a promising investment, our EDUCATION! I read NMSU had to increase their tuition, and I am sure UNM will follow. Las Cruces High School is ghastly over crowded; there is a teacher shortage because our salaries are not competitive enough and we haven't had a quality school board and superintendent in years! Oh but our brilliant county commission and selfless servant of the public Bill Richardson were touting them horns for this tax increase; well those horns were loud and clear. What is going on New Mexico? We need to get our priorities straight, quality education is the key to progress in our beloved state. We have these self righteous "community planners" on the county commission with Harvard mouths and sugar gum drop smiles and everyone thinks, "oh they must know what is best for my community". No you are wrong! Only you know what is best for your community, you grew up here, worked here, raised a family here! We have the tainted Eastern money and political sharks that are developing our beloved New Mexico into their very own money trees. I really am worried for our state and for our people, the good life we all have lived may not be there for our grandchildren. Let us invest into our future a smarter way, let us preserve our history, let us defiantly make a stand together against the outsiders free hands at our wallets, Let us cut those free hands right off! Progress is natural and needed in a society, but progress un checked is dangerous. The man with biggest pocket book will choose what progress is necessary for the rest of us "ignorant" locals. Vote wisely my friends. Vote New Mexican.

Snow In April

Today a couple of inches of snow came our way, in APRIL!!! This weather is so unpredictable. I was reading that back home there was dust storms affecting New Mexico and Arizona. Oregon reportedly received 12 inches of snow, and the South had freezing temperatures! Mr. Gore isn't this ironic?! That is one issue I need to investigate a little more in detail. I understand the central issue of global warming, but there is no clear truth about it. There is a consensus that it exists, but no scientists or meteorologists will prove its true reality. Not that they are incapable but merely they cannot, it is not possible to get a true record of Earth's climate history. I have read notes of great detail that tell us when the great Vikings settled Greenland hundreds of years ago they grew a wheat crop and they had a long summer season; this indicates that there was global warming back then! Greenland has no wheat crop and no suitable Viking villages anymore as well. Everyone should seek a balanced source to find their answers, and I am not referring to Fox News.

Tsk Tsk Madame Speaker

Why did Nancy Pelosi go to Syria? Correct me if I am wrong but she is not a formulator of foreign policy. There are four formulators: The President, Secretary of State (State Department), Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Public Opinion. Sorry Madame Speaker, you don't fit in any category. Her shadow presidency is going to hurt our national integrity. Her actions were clearly counter-productive to our current foreign policy and she has no business or entitlement to initiate conversation with a terrorist supporting government.

The New Mexico Politico

"In America any boy may become President and I suppose it's just one of the risks he takes." - Adlai Stevenson

Since I was a kid I have always been intrigued by politics. I remember watching CNN with my grandfather Sheriff Henry B. Diaz in 1992 and asking who was running for president. My grandfather a staunch Blue Dog Democrat replied,"President Bush the Republican and our favorite Democrat William Jefferson Clinton." I think that was my first inquiry into politics. Soon after that I attended the political rally held outside the Ol' Dona Ana County Court House and being hoisted up onto my Father's shoulders to get a look at this Mr. William Jefferson Clinton and Mr. Albert Gore. I was so enthused to finally see these men I had been watching on the news with my family. My Grandparents thought it was adorable and would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I innocently responded, "The President."

I am now a double major in History-Political Science and an attentive observer of current events and our political world. I started reading blogs about a year ago and I finally decided that I would start one mainly concerned with World events and New Mexico politics. I purely want to give my perspective and the perspective held by many young Americans on the World in which we live in. I admit I am not the greatest writer but I think this is a tremendous opportunity to for me to be a "citizen soldier" and initiate a dialogue on issues that affect our society. We must be active participants in our governments, if we choose not to it is tantamount to condoning a democratic dictatorship.
